Welcome Spring!
In Science we are beginning our last Unit- Needs of Plants and Animals. We are currently discussing what makes a plant a fruit or vegetable. Today we were examing different type of seeds.

We have been busy builders! We had Teacher's Pet into the classroom on March 6 as part of a STEM project (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and used Teva Planks to meet different building challenges.
In preparation for this activity, we tried buiding tall structures using different kinds of cups that could withstand a strong wind test.

We're almost midway through February. Just a reminder that students' names were sent home last week for Valentine's Day Cards. Also this is our last week of Circle of Warmth initiative.
In Science we have been studying our Senses. We have used the sense of smell to determine what objects are hidden in enclosed canisters, how light helps us to see objects using peek boxes, we have observed differences between salt and sugar, flour and icing sugar through a magnifying glass, and touch, and we have tasted how salt, sugar and sour (lemons) change the flavour of foods.
We also examined how ticklish we are and how our sensors relay the message to our brain.

We are now in the part of the year I like to call the meat and potatoes part of learning. Routines and expectations are established. Base lines of learning are taken, and now we are using foundational learning to expand literacy and numeracy skills.

In Language Arts, the students are focusing in on the Beginning, Middle and End of stories. Using Winter Themed books and a favourite author, Jan Brett, the students are finding key sentences to summarize the beginning, middle and end of stories. You can reinforce this skill by discussions at home about stories, movies, shows that your child has viewed.

In Math, the students are using manipulatives to represent number sentences. They are creating "frogs" on "lilypads" and are adding or subtracting them, and writing corresponding number sentences.
