What a wonderful afternoon we had! The students made figurines for a Nativity Scene with the help of our wonderful parent volunteers. Thank you to the many moms who made our Salt Dough (no easy task!) and to our Mom's who were able to make in to assist us.
Enjoy the pictures from today.

Wednesday 28 November 2018

Grade One students have been busy learning about rhyming words, and looking for smaller words inside bigger ones. To help draw attention to rhyming words, we studied Nursery Rhymes for the month of November.
If you have not had a chance to log-in to Raz-Kids, now is a good time to take the opportunity to support reading in your home.
The children are learning about how animals prepare for Winter (migrate, hibernate or adapt), and how plants and people also prepare for the different seasons.
In Math, we are continuing to explore numbers using a Number line, adding one or two to a number, comparing numbers that are more than or less than a set number. Rolling a dice and counting on, or counting back. We have begun to incorporate problem solving in our Math work.
Our pictures below are adapting our game from our Family Math Night (Plus 1) and we are now playing Plus 2!

Thursday 25 October 2018

We are moving along very quickly these days....
In Language Arts, we have been doing some non-fiction work on pumpkins and their life cycle. And have been enjoying books about Hallowe'en. Journal writing is beginning with a focus right now on letter formation, spacing and letter/sound match.
Our Patterning Unit in Math has ended and we are now working on understanding numbers beyond 10. We are currently playing games to add 1 to a number to increase it (subtracting 1 will soon follow).
Our Colour Unit in Science has ended and we will be beginning our Seasonal Changes Unit.
Social Studies is a broad subject with looking right now at our school community and the different groups to which we belong.
Religion is focused on God's Creation and our gifts and talents.
Home Reading Books have started going home, Raz-Kids and Zorbit Math log-in information have also gone home to enrich your child's learning.
The pictures below are showing you one game we are playing to add onto an existing number.

Happy Thanksgiving to all our families! School is busy, and we are getting into our routines. Soon I will be asking for parent volunteers to come in to read with students. Please make sure you have attended the School Volunteer Orientation this year. This needs to be completed each school year.
As mentioned during Parent Teacher Conversations, Home Reading Books will be coming home later this month. Also coming home will be your child's log-in information for both Raz-Kids and Zorbit Math, along with an introductory letter about the programs. Watch for these items coming home soon.
The scientists in the class are mixing primary colours. Ask you child about Primary and Secondary Colours.

Monday 17 September 2018

Here we are in mid-September, already!
I am looking forward to meeting you at our Parent Teacher Conferences. Please make sure you book an appointment if you have not already done so. Mrs. Kulkarni has sent information via our weekly newsletter if you are unsure of what to do.
This week we also have our Terry Fox Walk. The students are asked to wear red to symbolize our National Pride. We will not be sending home pledge forms, but the students are asked to donate a loonie or toonie for the event.
We are well underway with our letter/sound review. This is a great time to reinforce with your child at home what sounds each letter makes. We are not looking at the vowel letters at this point (a,e,i,o, and u), those come later. The students participate in centre activities to practise the letter of the day. Below are pictures of some of the activities your child is doing at the centres.
